O’KEEFFE IN PROCESS
September 10, 2015 \u2013 January 17, 2016<\/p>\n

The New Mexico Museum of Art\u2019s upcoming exhibition O\u2019Keeffe in Process<\/em> is its contribution to the \u201cFall of Modernism\u201d cultural collaboration with the Georgia O\u2019Keeffe Museum.<\/p>\n

The exhibition opens Thursday, September 10, 2015, 5-7pm and runs through January 17, 2016.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Georgia O\u2019Keeffe was one of the most significant American Modernists and was arguably the most important woman artist of the twentieth century. She is known for the originality and individuality of her personal style of Modernist art. Featuring 36 O\u2019Keeffe oil paintings, 15 works on paper, and supporting materials from the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Georgia O\u2019Keeffe Museum, and private collections, this exhibition tells the story of the working technique of this twentieth-century New Mexico Master.<\/p>\n

Artworks on view will span the artist\u2019s career from early student portraits of family members created in 1905, to paintings executed during stays at Lake George in the late teens and first half of the twenties, to her iconic depictions of flowers, bones, and New Mexico landscapes, to her discovery of the view from the sky.<\/p>\n

In a rare opportunity to see some of these artworks together in one space, the exhibition brings related paintings from the two museum\u2019s collections into conversation. \u00a0Preliminary sketches and photographs hung alongside finished works will reveal both the steps in O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s creative process and her technical, art-making technique. Viewers will come to understand what makes an O\u2019Keeffe artwork recognizable as an O\u2019Keeffe.<\/p>\n

The free public opening reception for O\u2019Keeffe in Process<\/em> is Thursday, September 10, 2015, from 5-7 pm. Also opening that evening is Looking Forward\/Looking Back.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

An American Modernism<\/strong>,<\/em> the companion exhibition to O\u2019Keeffe in Process<\/em> will open on October 2, 2015, from 5:30-7:30pm.<\/p>\n

ABOUT THE FALL OF MODERNISM <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Fall of Modernism is a citywide collaboration that celebrates the Modernist art movement in America and runs from September of 2015 through January of 2016 anchored by the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Georgia O\u2019Keeffe Museum. The New Mexico Museum of Art will present two exhibitions, O\u2019Keeffe in Process<\/em> and An American Modernism<\/em>. It is complemented by the Georgia O\u2019Keeffe Museum\u2019s exhibition, From New York to New Mexico: Masterworks of American Modernism from the Vilcek Foundation Collection.<\/em> Numerous art galleries in Santa Fe will showcase Modernist art with exhibitions, programming, and events.
